Just like any news about Chevrolet volt generates electricity, few cars seemed to be capable enough to do the same. General Motors, yet, again comes out with its annual goals. This time the goal is to make 10,000 Chevrolet volt plug-in electric cars in 2011, which would be the first year of products and hence follow it up with 60,000 more cars in second year alone. Well that surely is a big way get into electric cars, the vice chairman and product chief bob lutz told the Times.
Whats the Caveat? well supply would be dependent on being able to provide enough batteries and electrical components. Well this would be the first major challenge with cars requiring heavy duty electric components!
General Motors would be selling the electric car for around $40,000 and the volt would be available for sale in November 2010. The volt will be able to cover 40 miles on electricity alone, whereas with gasoline generator, it can go additional 400 miles. Thats pretty good performance!
Truck Plan for future under review
With the soaring gasoline-price crisis, General Motors is reviewing its truck lineup to tackle the soaring gasoline prices that has paralyzed truck sales in United States. It had a big schedule for 2012, which would have seen launching of full-size trucks and SUVs. However, now General Motors might not stick to its original plan. To start with, the work on replacement for the GMT900 architecture that underpins the Chevrolet silverado, suburban, Tahoe and avalanche; the GMC sierra and Yukon; and the Cadillac Escalade, has been terminated indefinitely. well the idea is that rather than spending money in making new trucks, its better to come out with more fuel efficient vehicles including smaller cars, hybrids, electric vehicles and fuel-cell vehicles.
In today’s fuel-conscious environment, a car-based truck like the mid-size GMC Denali XT concept, unveiled at the 2008 Chicago auto show, becomes more attractive.
